HEYOOOO~ ALL!!! (O wO) SO!!! some of you may recall that i initiated a tiny event last Monday that i dubbed Micro Fic Monday!!! Well!!! i promised that i would draw my favourite submission and here we are! <3 <3 <3 @zaera-d​ is the winner this week!! <3 <3 <3 though… i do have a second, long form, piece i want to do too! but it’s three pages and will have to wait a bit! Kylo buried his face in Millie’s fluffy fur, ignoring the cat’s protests at his near suffocating hold. “It will be fine, Kylo.” Hux said again, trying in vain to comfort the insecure knight curled around his cat. “If anyone says a thing I will have them tried for insubordination.” A moan came from the head of thick, dark hair. “I miss my helmet. The hood isn’t enough.” Hux let out a sigh and knelt. He gently kissed Kylo’s ears, each on in turn. “You’re beautiful. Don’t be ashamed.”

This is going to be a long submission because I’m mad as hell. 

It’s frustrating as fuck in supposedly safe spaces that exist to discuss social justice issues, specifically equal opportunities, that all -isms are addressed except for fatphobia. It’s disheartening and even more frustrating to expect, to know that it won’t be addressed and you’ve learnt well enough from your past experiences to keep your mouth shut. I understand (at least where I am in the world) that institutions base their E.O policies on anti-discrimination legislation and fat discrimination is not yet included in this. But still….this movement is growing, surely E.O educators would have heard of it as the situation steadily worsens for higher weight people? Surely it would at least get a mention? Even, albeit, how it is linked to misogyny and impossible expectations of women’s appearance?

It just goes to show how normalised and perfectly acceptable it is to be fatphobic -   it was rampant in virtually all conversations before the session began and remained unchallenged by the group coordinators. A lot of the other women were talking about their hatred of fat, fat bodies, fat celebrities, and celebrating their dieting, weight loss etc. I listened contemptuously, feeling bound to silence because I was certain that bringing the topic up would invite some seriously terrible reactions.

This being such an unacknowledged social justice movement only adds insult to injury. Oppressed groups have to hear dehumanizing shit all the time, but higher weight people face the double bind of not having their oppression even minimally acknowledged and validated, meaning that our ability to express our pain and frustration is gagged by a society that invalidates and dismisses our experiences if we speak out. I realise we should not need to rely on thin people for validation of our movement, but, still….it would be a glimmer of hope if we could have public discussions about this….For there to be a precedent established that at least, in progressive circles, in the law - in places that should give a shit about us - that fatphobia won’t be tolerated, that we are people deserving of humanity, regardless of debates about health, cost, or -gasp!- the moral degeneracy of our ‘choice’ to be fat!

 I’m waiting with bated breath for that day to arrive. It really will be one of the most significant victories for this movement. 

Later, while reflecting on the day I’d had, I realised what allies are for and what solidarity actually looks like in practice. Besides listening and accepting our experiences, which is only the first step, the crucial part of being an ally is correcting and educating your own. And sometimes, in that process, that can mean speaking on x person’s behalf if they can intuit that you feel unable - because it’s not safe/too painful/frustrating - to do so yourself.

Thin allies, take note: if you hear other thin people being offensive fatphobic fucks -  call them out on it. Educate yourselves and then educate yourself some more. Then educate them if they’re receptive to it. If they’re not, then repeat step one so they at least learn to shut their fucking mouths around you.  Read books, articles, poetry on the subject. Listen to talks about higher weight people’s experiences. Arm yourselves with the evidence out there that shatter their fallacious arguments.

They are 100% more likely to listen to what you have to say on the matter than a fat person. Do your part. Do not stay silent. Challenge this shit. You have a moral obligation now that you know.

This was a pretty amazing experience.

I was the first person in line for Cockles ops and since there had been a girl getting a Misha re-take right before me, Jensen was talking with Clif while he waited. Misha actually had to pull Jensen over to the op.

So Jensen comes up, apologizes to me for the wait, and I tell him it’s fine (I may have stuttered a little, he’s VERY pretty and this was my first time meeting him)

I give Misha the asexual pride flag and ask him to put it over his shoulders. I knew Misha already knew what the flag was (see here and here), but I was uncertain about Jensen, so I hand him the bisexual pride flag (he actually needed help getting it over both shoulders) and tell him, “Just so you know, this is the bisexual pride flag”.

He can’t hear me over the music, so he says, “What?”

So I repeat, “This is the bisexual pride flag, for people that are fans of bisexual Dean. Is this ok?” (I forget exactly what I said, but I know I mentioned what it was, why, and I checked to see if he was cool with it.)

Jensen thinks about it for a moment, then smiles and chuckles a bit. He nods and goes, “Ok, let’s do this.”

I turned to face the camera, Chris snaps the picture, and I collect the flags. Jensen actually pulled me into a hug as I was leaving. (And several people in line cheered and told me ‘thank you’.)

This was honestly pretty magical and I’m glad it turned out so well!

It’s great. However, there were probably ways you could have asked that without making me feel like a dinosaur. I do think it is an amazing privilege to be able to grow up with someone. To know someone almost as well as you know yourself. I recommend it. We were 16 when we got together. My only regret is that we didn’t start dating younger.
